Toyota Takes Technology to the Next Level with Satellite Communications Research

Toyota Mirai Satellite Communications Research

Imagine staying connected to your friends and family across the globe no matter how far away they may be. Staying connected is a primary focus of Toyota engineers and they have taken another step towards providing unrivaled connectivity no matter when, where or how far away you may be -- all while you are in your Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle. This new and innovative technology was put on display at the 2016 North American International Auto Show with Toyota Mirai satellite communications research.

What is Satellite Communications Research and How Does it Work?

This research is built around the idea of high capacity satellites that provide higher data transfer rates. Traditional satellite communications systems are bulky, cumbersome units that don’t have a practical use in the automotive sector. To combat this issue, Toyota has teamed up with Kymeta, a U.S.-based company that is the world leader in flat panel antenna technology. This technology implements software and LCD technology to stay connected with satellites offering nearly limitless opportunities.

Toyota has begun testing on this technology by integrating Kymeta satellite antennas into a Toyota Mirai-based research vehicle. With the lightweight satellite panels integrated into the new-age design of the Toyota Mirai, Toyota can monitor the capabilities of this technology for future purposes by transferring large amounts of data to a vehicle. While the Toyota Entune infotainment interface is already an asset to Toyota drivers and integrated connectivity, the ability to communicate with satellites would improve connectivity exponentially.

What Are the Benefits of Satellite Communications?

You may be wondering as you read this -- what does this mean for me and my new Toyota? There are three chief benefits to satellite communications that are currently being explored by the Toyota Research and Development team. If you imagine the Toyota Entune interface on steroids, it may help illustrate what this technology may mean for the future of the automotive industry. Here are three primary benefits.
  • Increased distribution of large amounts of data to your vehicle -- music, information and more.
  • Broad coverage that extends across the globe, giving you access to information no matter where you are.
  • A stable and secure connection to communication hardware, particularly in emergency situations.
